You’ll experience great weather and plenty to do this spring in Tucson.

Here is just a partial list of the great activities available in our community in May and June:

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Wednesday, May 5 6PM-10PM at the luxurious JW Mariott Starr Pass. National Kidney Foundation Golf Classic Friday, May 7. La Paloma Country Club, an award-winning golf course, will host this preeminent amateur charity golf event. 5th Annual Taste of Arizona – Friday, May 7 6PM- 9PM Apple Store La Encantada, 2905 East Skyline Drive in Tucson. Mother’s Day Dinner at Reid Park Zoo—Sunday, May 9 5PM-7:30PM See over 500 exotic animals ! There will be a Mexican Buffet, Mariachi Music, and up close visits with animal ambassadors. Kids will enjoy face painting, games, and crafts. See www.tucsonzoo.org for more details.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream (www.ballettucson.org) May 22-23. Ballet Tucson presents Shakespeare’s well- known play set to Mendelssohn’s striking score at Tucson Music Hall.

Our Place in the Universe—(www.skycenter.arizona.edu) Friday Jun 4—the UA Mt. Lemmon’s SkyCenter offers opportunities to observe the night sky in this unique setting. Participants receive images of the universe they helped create with the telescope.

Music in the Park at Oracle State Park (www.friendsosp.org) Sunday June 13 7PM-9PM– Friends of Oracle State Park present a concert featuring Beau Renfro, a recording artist with Stardust Records. Beau was elected into the Indie Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

Night Wings at Pima Air & Space Museum (www.pimaair.org) Saturday June 26 5PM-9PM. See nearly 300 aircraft! Pima Air and Space Museum hosts tram rides until sundown and a walking tour of indoor hangars. Kids will enjoy flying paper airplanes, tasting space food, launching paper air rockets, and more!

Nightly Observing Program at Kitt Peak National Observatory– ongoing through July 14. Use the observatory’s three telescopes to take a visual journey through the night sky. Visit www.noao.edu/outreach/nop/ for more information.

Tucson Farmers’ Markets

The Southern Arizona region can boast of wonderful sunlit days and pleasant warm nights while serving as a home to some of the country’s best open air farmer’s markets. The region’s level, even seasonal climate provides ample opportunities for purchasing quality vegetables, fruits, nuts plus other assorted goods year around.

The Tucson Farmer’s markets operate three revolving green markets throughout the Tucson area in Oro Valley and St Phillip’s plaza on weekends, while Udall Park operates during the week. These markets are open 52 weeks a year providing a direct connection with a vibrant gathering of over 75 vendors who include farms, cheese makers, bakeries, meat and seafood providers plus a host of specialty food producers.

For a truly unique Farmer’s Market experience, shoppers will find all they need at the 17th street Farmer’s market. This upscale urban market located crosswise between S. Euclid Avenue and E. 17th Street provides shoppers with fresh and exotic fruit and vegetables such as Italian eggplant and quality international foods while providing excellent customer service coupled with an atmosphere of refined relaxation that makes for a memorable shopping experience.

One of Southern Arizona’s longest running Farmer’s markets is located off Country club, The Community Food Bank Farmer’s market. This local south side gem operates within a sustainable self enclosed farm stand providing fruit, vegetables and eggs from the center’s demonstration garden, while on Tucson’s Westside the TCFB operates one of “America’s top ten farmer’s markets” has recognized by Eating Well magazine, the Santa Cruz Farmer’s market. Service providers at Santa Cruz market provide an educational platform paired with a social atmosphere making a visit a true social event.

In these health conscience times, shoppers searching for first rate quality fruit and other goods at Farmer’s markets should use their four senses to find quality produce goods. Be sure to check the color of your fresh produce as well as take time to touch and smell it. Deeper hues, generally mean produce is nearly ripe or ripe while a lighter colored one may take more time to become ripe. Also, check for markings along the skin of the produce. Bruises or softspots are a sign that the item as been mishandled at some stage in its lifetime. Tucson’s neighborhood Farmer’s markets provide wild and organic produce at quality prices affording young and old ample opportunity to experience the finest produce nature as to offer.

Tucson, Arizona is a beautiful part of the country. It is a great place to live, and an even better place to join in on community events and festivals. If you live in the area, or plan a vacation to Tucson, be sure to check out some of the wonderful activities listed, such as:

May kicks off with Cinco de Mayo, which is May 5, 2010. This annual event is held at the Fiesta Area at Kennedy Park. Dancing, music, craft, food and fun fill the day. What a colorful and enjoying way to spend the day in Tucson!

Later in May celebrate Mother’s Day by taking her to the Fiesta de la Primavera. Take a stroll along The Holy Trinity Monastery or enjoy some of the wonderful food items and crafts. Your mom will appreciate it and remember it always.

June offers you a chance to visit the Santa Cruz River for the Dia de San Juan Fiesta. Dig out our boots and jeans and spend the day like a cowboy. Watch trick horseback riders along with other entertainment.

Enjoy July 4th events such as the Tour for Tucson’s Children, an event to promote safety for kids. Join them at the Tucson Convention Center for one of the schedule walks or runs. It is important that kids learn safety, and this is a great way to educate them.

If you are into vineyards and wine tasting, then you need to head on over to the August Festival at Sonoita Vineyards. Grape stomping and tasting are on tap for this event. If you are truly ‘into’ wine, that is the place for you!

October offers a haunted hayride at the old La Posta Quemade Ranch. Watch out, this one is scary! Moonlight always offers fun and screams!

Who doesn’t love the zoo? Take the family to the zoo in December for the annual lights at Reid Park Zoo. Santa, of course, will be the featured guest!

Want fresh veggies and not sure where to buy them? Try the Santa Cruz River’s Farmer’s Market. This market is open from February through November near the downtown area. Or try one of the various other markets scattered throughout the area.

As you can see, there is always someone interesting, fun and even educational going on in Tucson, Arizona. Take advantage of what the city of Tucson offers annually and have a great time!

Tucson is an active city year round, known for its warm, sunny weather and friendly embrace of tourists. Remember that our hotels are busiest in the winter and spring months, so try to book early!

Have a great night of entertainment with one of America’s favorite comediennes, Lily Tomlin, live at the University of Arizona’s Centennial Theater on Saturday, March 6 at 8PM. You’re sure to remember her hilarious characters Ernestine and Edith Ann from the classic TV show Laugh In, come see what she has in store for you now!

Don’t miss the Tucson Festival of Books, a great event for the whole family on Saturday and Sunday March 13-14 at the U of A campus. Parking and admission are free, and there will be hundreds of great authors on hand, including several New York Times best-selling authors, J.A. Jance, and Elmore Leonard. Catch Major League Baseball Spring Training with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Electric Park or the Colorado Rockies at Hi Corbett Field. The Arts in the Park-Fine Arts and Jazz Festival will be held at the lovely Canada Del Oro Riverfront Park on Saturday and Sunday, April 10-11. You’ll see live jazz performances from regional and national musicians, enjoy gourmet foods and beverages, and beautiful artwork against the backdrop of the magnificent Catalina Mountains. The children’s art activities will help make it a great experience for all.

Come to the 99th Annual Pima County Fair on April 15-25. Enjoy all the animals, exhibits, concerts, auto shows, carnival rides, delicious food, and more. Visit www.pimacountyfair.com for all the details.

See the unique playwright, author, humorist and commentator David Sedaris live at Tucson Music Hall on Sunday April 25 at 7PM. Known well for his appearances on NPR’s This American Life, you’re sure to enjoy the experience even more in person. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com.

Tuscon: A Town of Excitement Jan 10^th – Feb 28th

Southern Arizona is packed with fun and exciting things to experience. All you need to do is know where to look and have good company. January and February of 2010 start the year off with a bang. Listed here are just a few of the interesting things you can do in Tuscon.

Something that the whole family can enjoy is the “Meanwhile Back at the Ranch” exhibit held at Tohono Chul Park, beginning January 14, 2010. This exhibit was inspired by a cowboy rodeo and will include real-life cowboys and cowgirls. After all, nothing says “fun in Arizona” like warm weather and a rodeo. Even Cowgirl Hall of Fame photographer Louise Serpa’s exhibit will be there! Best of all this event is free! You can find out more information about the rodeo by clicking here

Another fun, no-cost activity is being held at the Paradiso Bar and Lounge. They have started having “Free Concert Thursdays,” starting January 14, 2010. All of these concerts will start promptly at 8 p.m., every Thursday night. This will include tributes to rock and country legends such as Elvis Presley, Aerosmith, and Tim McGraw. On the other end of the music spectrum, the musical “Legally Blonde” is making its way to the Tuscon Music Hall starting January 19, 2010 through January 24, 2010. Based off of the 2001 hit movie starring Reese Witherspoon, Tuscon Music Hall is offering quality entertainment at an affordable price. This family show is selling tickets for as low as $29 a ticket. This is definitely a show where everyone can find something to enjoy, even if it’s just the idea of a dog named Bruiser, running around in a musical. February brings about a brand new type excitement, starting off with the “Carnival of Illusion” that opens on February 5, 2010. This will be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Reid Park until late May. Roland Sarlot and Susan Eyed will be performing their exclusive parlour show each night. This extraordinary experience will include a 2-for-1 dinner special and a night that you will never forget. This is an absolute great show in Tuscon!

On a more romantic note, you can celebrate Valentine’s Day with that special someone or those whom you love at the Valentine’s Day Homecoming Concert on February 13, 2010. This will be held in the Westin La Paloma Ballroom and tickets are selling for $35-75. Both grammy-winning Diana Schuur and the Jeff Daniel Band will be performing to set the right mood for the evening. What better way to swoon your loved one than with some drinks and sexy music? And for the full resort experience you can stay at the The Westin La Paloma for only $149 a night.

February ends with the “Walking with Dinosaurs” exhibit at the Tuscon Convention Center. It is the only show of its kind where you will get to be in an arena with life-size dinosaurs!
