Marana

Marana, AZ

Marana, AZ, sits above an underground aquifer providing it a vast water supply. It is located on Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson, and was incorporated in 1977. The average household income is just over $60,000 with just under 5,000 households and over 13,000 residents.

The city has leagues for adult and kids sports for softball (both co-ed and men’s), tennis, golf, and a skate park. The parks department also sponsors mountain trail guides and various community activities throughout the year. Marana is also host to the PGA Tour’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, and has a former CIA air-base at Pinal Airport. Due to it’s proximity to Phoenix, Marana provides opportunity for professional and amateur sporting events that are otherwise vacant in the vast deserts of the United States’ Southwest, including ice hockey and ice skating.

Thanks to near-by mountains and parks surrounding Marana and neighboring Tucson, residents can enjoy nature walks, hikes, and sight-seeing. Mountains dot the landscape, providing a calm flow to the natural beauty of the area.

The Marana Unified School District comprises 17 schools in the Marana area, including two high schools, Marana High and Mountain View High. The schools have full sports programs including fall, winter and spring sports, giving students opportunities to build close relationships both inside and outside of the classroom, as well as providing an opportunity for students to take part in teams bigger than themselves. The academics are high level, too, with nine “A+” schools and three “National Blue Ribbon” schools.

Marana has a great real estate market and the city government provides assistance for low-income families when needed. High income jobs are not unusual, allowing the community to flourish in it’s desert oasis atmosphere. Marana has abundant amounts of water, allowing it an unique opportunity amongst desert cities.

Numerous fine dining and local eateries are either in Marana or near-by Tucson, as well as shopping centers, sports complexes, and entertainment venues. Because of Marana’s location near two major cities, it allows it to partake in all the excitement of urban life. Yet Marana is far enough away from Tucson and Phoenix as to allow it a certain quietness that makes it a special place to live.
