Oro Valley is a town in Pima County, Az, about 6 miles from Tucson. Once thought of as a bedroom community, the town of 40,000 has begun to transcend that reputation, with a diverse population that includes families, retirees and young professionals. Recently, Oro Valley was honored by Family Circle magazine as one of the top ten places in the country to raise a family. Other honors bestowed upon the community include being number 44 Fortune Small Business magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Launch a Business” list, as well as being listed as one of the ten “Most Playful” cities by Nick Jr Family Magazine. The town is home to nearly a dozen High Tech firms. The housing stock is diverse and becoming more so. There are apartments, single family homes in master planned communities as well as luxurious estates.
The town was only incorporated in 1974, but its history began long before that. Hohokam Native Americans lived in the northern part of what is now Oro Valley for almost 700 years. The area’s modern history begins in the 1870’s with much of what is now Oro Valley being utilized for range land by early settlers. Later in the decade the area was frequented by prospectors looking for gold in the Santa Catalina mountains. Growth picked up after WWII and skyrocketed in the 90’s, growing by nearly 300 percent between 1990 and 2000.
